Global-PCB Supply Tightens

Global PCB Supply Tightens as AI Demand Strains PC Hardware Output

Amid the continued boom in global AI computing buildout, the supply-demand imbalance in high-end printed circuit boards (PCBs) is becoming increasingly pronounced. Industry sources indicate that as hyperscale AI server orders keep ramping up, high-end copper-clad laminate and PCB manufacturing capacity is being heavily occupied, leaving global PCB supply tight. Some PC hardware lead times have stretched to as long as 30 months, while prices for motherboards, graphics cards, and other end products are under mounting pressure.

This supply tightness is no short-term blip. Looking up the supply chain, demand for high-grade copper-clad laminates and high-frequency high-speed laminates is expanding rapidly, while high-end electronic glass fiber - the key reinforcement base for CCL - requires dedicated looms, new plants, and long capacity-ramp cycles, making supply notably rigid. Upstream materials have been repriced repeatedly: a major laminate producer has issued its eighth price-increase notice this year, raising thin-glass laminate and prepreg (PP) prices by 15%, while Panasonic has announced a 200% hike for certain multilayer CCL grades effective from January 2027. Cost pressure is cascading step by step down the supply chain.

For PCB manufacturers in the middle of the chain, securing stable material supply and managing costs effectively has become the key differentiator in this round of competition. Leading players, backed by quality customer relationships and a higher share of premium capacity, have absorbed the impact of substrate price hikes with relative ease, while companies more reliant on spot markets face steeper margin pressure. The industry generally expects high-end supply tightness to persist in the near term, with elevated prices likely to continue until the next wave of premium capacity comes online.
