1.5GW! Emeren and Matrix Renewables Plan to Deploy Battery Storage Projects in Italy
According to foreign media reports, energy storage developer Emeren has sold two more battery storage projects to Italian renewable energy developer Matrix Renewables, with a total installed capacity of 293MW, while the total installed capacity of the company's development and transfer of energy storage projects reached 1GW.
The two energy storage projects, to be deployed in Apulia and Lazio, Italy, are the latest in a development services agreement (DSA) signed by the two parties in June 2023, in which the companies plan to jointly develop and deploy 1.5GW of battery energy storage systems in Italy.
Emeren said that these energy storage projects are deployed in strategically important areas, mainly to balance grid operations, and that they will reach readiness by early 2025.
The total installed capacity of energy storage systems transferred by the company to Matrix Renewables as part of a development services agreement (DSA) amounted to about 1GW.According to industry media reports, the two companies reached an agreement last November to deploy five energy storage projects with a total installed capacity of 410MW for a duration of eight hours.
The final size and duration of the energy storage projects could be close to reaching readiness.
The market for grid-scale battery energy storage is set to boom in the coming years as grid operator Terna seeks to integrate growing renewable generation capacity.
The business case for this will be centered around capacity markets and integrating renewable generation facilities, meaning that energy storage project durations will be in the four to eight hour range.
The European Commission approved a €17.7 billion ($19.5 billion) state aid program late last year to fund 9GW/71GWh of energy storage systems deployed in Italy.
