In 2021, imbalanced supply-demand relationship and dramatic raw material price trends slowed supply capacity growth in the polysilicon sector, whereas ingot capacity of the mono-Si wafer sector expands at rather large scale, causing a direct impact on the overall supply-demand relationship.
Compared to other sectors in the PV industry, it takes longer time for polysilicon capacity to grow, which requires about 13-16 months for a capacity expansion project to initiate construction and enter operation. Based on current progresses of major polysilicon makers’ expansion projects, few production capacities were substantially added in the first three quarters this year; only some new capacities being commissioned as scheduled in the fourth quarter. In the meantime, mono-Si wafer ingot capacity ramps up continuously and has increased by more than 65%, intensifying the imbalanced upstream supply-demand relationship.
