Wind power is one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies. Worldwide usage is rising, in part because costs are falling. Global onshore and offshore wind capacity has increased nearly 75-fold over the past 20 years, jumping from 7.5 gigawatts (GW) in 1997 to around 564 GW in 2018, according to the latest data from IRENA. Wind power production doubled between 2009 and 2013, and in 2016 wind accounted for 16% of renewable electricity generation. Wind speeds are high in many parts of the world, but the best places to generate wind power are sometimes in remote areas. Offshore wind power has huge potential.

The capacity of wind turbines increases over time. In 1985, a typical turbine was rated at 0.05 megawatts (MW) and had a rotor diameter of 15 meters. Today's new wind projects have onshore turbine capacity of around 2 MW and offshore wind capacity around 3-5 MW. Commercial wind turbines have reached a capacity of 8 MW with rotor diameters of up to 164 meters. The average capacity of wind turbines increased from 1.6 MW in 2009 to 2 MW in 2014.
