1.Introduction
Nano Conformal Coating is a protective coating for PCBs prepared using nanotechnology. Its coating thickness typically ranges from the nanoscale to the sub-micron scale (generally only tens to hundreds of nanometers)-significantly thinner than traditional conformal coatings (which are typically tens to hundreds of microns thick). By forming a dense, nanoscale protective film on the surface of the circuit board, it provides protective functions such as moisture resistance, salt spray resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrical insulation.
2.Key Features
Extremely Thin and Lightweight: The thickness of nano conformal coating is merely a fraction-sometimes as little as one-hundredth-of that of traditional coatings. Once applied, it adds virtually no weight or volume to the circuit board, making it particularly well-suited for high-density, miniaturized electronic products. Because the coating is so thin, it does not impede component heat dissipation, nor does it alter the circuit board's original electrical parameters or signal transmission characteristics.
Deep Penetration: Nanoscale particles possess extremely small dimensions, endowing them with excellent fluidity and penetrability. They can deeply infiltrate the gaps between component pins, the crevices within solder joints, and the microscopic pores on the PCB surface, creating comprehensive, all-encompassing protective encapsulation that leaves no blind spots-a feat often difficult to achieve with traditional coating processes.
Hydrophobic and Oleophobic: Most nano conformal coatings are based on fluorosilicone or modified siloxane systems. Upon curing, they form low-surface-energy nanostructures on the surface, generating hydrophobic and oleophobic properties akin to the "lotus effect." Water droplets and oil stains struggle to adhere to the surface, effectively blocking the intrusion of moisture, perspiration, and corrosive liquids.
High Transparency: The coating is almost completely transparent and, once cured, is virtually imperceptible to the naked eye. This ensures that the visibility of components and markings on the circuit board remains unaffected, while also facilitating subsequent maintenance, inspection, and rework procedures.
3.Distinction from Traditional Conformal Coatings
Traditional conformal coatings (such as acrylic, polyurethane, or silicone-based systems) typically form a relatively thick physical barrier through spraying, dipping, or brushing methods, relying on their thickness and density to isolate the circuit from the external environment. In contrast, nano conformal coatings leverage the unique surface and interfacial effects of nanomaterials to achieve equivalent-or even superior-protective performance using an extremely thin film layer. To draw an analogy: traditional conformal coatings are like putting a "raincoat" on a circuit board, whereas nano-conformal coatings are like applying an "invisible waterproof film."
4.Curing Principles
Nano-conformal coatings offer a variety of curing methods, common examples include:
• Room-Temperature Moisture Curing: Relies on moisture in the air to cross-link; simple to apply and suitable for batch dip-coating processes.
• UV Curing:Achieves a tack-free surface within seconds; highly efficient and ideal for automated production lines.
• Thermal Curing: Accelerates the reaction through heating, thereby enhancing the density of the coating layer.
Some high-end products also employ dual-curing mechanisms to balance efficiency with effective coverage in "shadow areas" (regions shielded from the primary curing source).
5.Typical Applications
Nano-conformal coatings are particularly well-suited for applications where size, weight, and aesthetics are critical factors:
• Consumer Electronics: Smartphones, TWS earbuds, smartwatches, electric toothbrushes, etc.-providing protection against daily exposure to sweat and moisture.
• Automotive Electronics: Compact in-cabin sensors and control modules-requiring a thin, lightweight profile combined with resistance to temperature fluctuations.
• LED Lighting: Protection for LED chips and driver boards-the transparent coating ensures no compromise on luminous efficiency.
• Medical Devices: Portable medical equipment-requiring resistance to corrosion from bodily fluids while meeting strict biocompatibility standards.
• Drones and Model Aircraft: Applications with extremely stringent weight-saving requirements-the nano-coating adds virtually no additional load.
6.Limitations
Nano-conformal coatings are not a universal solution. Due to their extremely thin film thickness, their resistance to mechanical abrasion and scratching is typically lower than that of traditional, thicker conformal coatings. Furthermore, in extremely harsh environments (such as prolonged immersion, exposure to strong acids or bases, or high-concentration salt spray), their long-term protective durability may fall short of that offered by polyurethane or silicone-based systems. Consequently, they are best utilized as a protective solution for everyday environments-or as a specialized, complementary measure alongside traditional conformal coatings-rather than serving as the sole protective barrier for heavy industrial machinery or deep-sea equipment.
