Dual-Cure Conformal Coating

May 29, 2026

1.Introduction

Dual-Cure Conformal Coating is a protective coating for PCB circuit boards that utilizes two distinct curing mechanisms-most commonly, a combination of UV (ultraviolet) curing and moisture curing.
Traditional single-component UV conformal coatings suffer from a significant limitation: areas inaccessible to light cannot be cured. Dual-cure technology overcomes this drawback by employing the synergistic action of two mechanisms, thereby ensuring that circuit boards with complex structures receive a complete, uniform protective layer free of any unshielded dead spots.

2.Core Principles
UV curing targets surfaces directly exposed to light, achieving a tack-free surface-and thus rapid curing-within a timeframe ranging from a few seconds to a few tens of seconds. Moisture curing, conversely, specifically acts upon areas inaccessible to light-such as the undersides of components, the gaps between pins, and the shadowed regions of connectors-typically requiring 24 to 72 hours to complete deep-layer curing. These two mechanisms operate with a clear division of labor: UV curing provides immediate surface strength and enhances production line efficiency, while moisture curing quietly completes the final cross-linking in concealed areas, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the entire circuit board without any omissions.

3.Key Features
• Solvent-free, 100% Solids Content: Zero VOC emissions, ensuring environmental compliance; no waiting required for solvent evaporation during the curing process.
• High Process Efficiency: Cures within seconds under UV irradiation, allowing for immediate handling; moisture curing proceeds simultaneously with subsequent manufacturing steps.
• Comprehensive Protection: Typically withstands temperatures ranging from -55°C to 150°C, offering robust protection against moisture, salt spray, and corrosion, as well as excellent electrical insulation properties.
• Easy Inspection: Most products contain a fluorescent tracer that emits a blue glow under a 365 nm UV lamp, facilitating easy visual or AOI inspection to verify coating integrity.

4.Typical Applications
Suitable for high-density, complex-structure PCBAs, such as:
• Automotive Electronics (ECUs, sensors, ADAS modules)
• Industrial Control Boards, Home Appliance Controllers
• Optical Modules, Communication Equipment
• Any precision circuit boards featuring BGAs or connector undersides.
