Core Differences Between FCT and ICT in the PCBA Industry

Feb 24, 2026

In the testing process of the PCBA industry, FCT and ICT are two of the most core and commonly used testing methods, which are easy to be confused by many people. Although both are used to test the quality of PCBA products and eliminate faults, their testing focuses, methods and purposes are completely different. This guide of about 500 words will help you distinguish them quickly and easily understand their core functions.

First, clarify two basic concepts in simple terms: ICT (In-Circuit Test) is in-circuit testing, focusing on "checking components and connections"; FCT (Functional Test) is functional testing, focusing on "checking effects and practicality". Simply put, ICT checks whether the PCBA "has the right components installed and good connections", while FCT checks whether the PCBA "can work normally and meet the usage requirements".

Core Difference 1: Different testing focuses. ICT mainly detects whether the components (resistors, capacitors, chips, etc.) on the PCBA are missing, whether the soldering is good, and whether there are problems such as cold soldering, short circuits and wrong components. It does not pay attention to the actual function of the PCBA, which is equivalent to "checking basic indicators in a physical examination" to ensure that the components and connections are free of abnormalities.

Core Difference 2: Different testing methods. ICT uses test probes to contact the test points of the PCBA, and detects circuit continuity and component parameters with the help of instruments. It does not need to connect external equipment, with fast testing speed and high accuracy, which is suitable for batch testing. FCT, on the other hand, needs to connect the PCBA to a test fixture that simulates the actual working scenario, simulate its normal working state, and detect whether various functions meet the standards, such as testing the call and display functions of mobile phone PCBA.

Core Difference 3: Different testing purposes. ICT is used for early detection in the PCBA production process to timely find soldering and component problems and reduce subsequent rework costs. FCT is used in the later stage of production to detect whether the finished PCBA can meet the actual usage needs and ensure that the products delivered to customers are qualified.

Summary: The two complement each other. ICT is the "basic check", and FCT is the "finished product inspection". Together, they form the core link of PCBA testing, which is indispensable to ensure the quality and reliability of PCBA products.
