Who will be involved in the PCB design?

Jan 15, 2026

  • PCB Designer

A PCB designer is a professional role in the field of electrical engineering. The sole focus of a PCB designer is the design and function of a printed circuit board. PCB designers typically need knowledge of CAD tools and are responsible for the schematic, component selection, layout, and documentation phases of the design process.

PCB designers need to be thoroughly familiar with the function of the specific circuit boards they design and are responsible for making decisions such as the appropriate level of board stiffness, optimal core materials, and other material/organic decisions.

  • Electrical Engineer/System Architect

he responsibilities of an electrical engineer or system architect are broader than those of a PCB designer. They are responsible for integrating PCBs into larger electrical systems. This may involve mapping connections between the PCB and other inputs, and even determining the optimal board layout based on system requirements.

In smaller organizations, the functions of a PCB designer and an electrical engineer/system architect may be combined into a single role. However, it is crucial to distinguish between the design of the board itself and the overall mapping and visualization of the entire electrical system.

  • Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineers offer a unique perspective on the overall fit of components and can guide changes to parts or adjustments to the design for better integration into the overall product design. Involving mechanical engineers is crucial when integrating the PCB into the overall product design.

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, mechanical engineers also need to understand how to incorporate thermal management into the entire product to prevent system overheating, a major issue in PCB design and implementation.

  • PCB Manufacturers

PCB manufacturers are also key participants in the PCB design, integration, and manufacturing process. Throughout the design process, it's essential to involve the PCB manufacturer, responsible for procuring the materials needed to actually manufacture the PCB, in discussions. This is because implementing the designs developed by mechanical and PCB engineers requires various physical resources, and procurement and manufacturers can provide valuable perspectives.

Furthermore, for any product involving a PCB, especially more complex systems, PCB manufacturing can account for a significant portion of the budget. Therefore, PCB manufacturers are a crucial group to participate in when discussing estimated costs, which is essential when submitting project plans to management.
