Surface Finishing Selection Guide for Different PCBA Scenarios

Jun 22, 2026

PCB surface finish directly determines soldering quality, service life and environmental adaptability of finished PCBA, yet many purchasers lack clear standards to choose the proper coating. Main mainstream processes include OSP, ENIG, HASL, Immersion Silver and Hard Gold, each with unique cost, flatness and storage limits, matching different downstream application fields.

OSP is low-cost halogen-free eco finish with smooth surface, ideal for consumer electronics, wearable devices and mass low-power PCBA. But its anti-oxidation layer fails after 6 months storage, unsuitable for multi-reflow processes. ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) owns stable flatness and corrosion resistance, widely used on boards with BGA, QFN and fine-pitch chips for AI servers, medical equipment and automotive control modules. However, improper plating parameters may trigger black pad hidden risks.

Traditional HASL hot air solder leveling features low price and strong weldability for power supply and simple industrial boards, while uneven tin thickness restricts its use on high-density circuits. Immersion Silver delivers outstanding signal transmission performance for high-frequency communication PCBA, and hard gold is adopted on connectors with frequent plugging due to extreme wear resistance.

Qualified turnkey PCBA manufacturers will recommend matching surface finishing based on clients' product usage environment, batch quantity and budget. Wrong surface coating selection will cause soldering failure or early product aging, increasing after-sales maintenance costs. Reasonable finish matching balances product reliability and production expenditure, becoming an essential professional ability for EMS suppliers serving global customers.
