Singapore deploys energy storage systems to help maintain reliable source of solar power supply
SINGAPORE: Singapore has deployed its first utility-scale energy storage system at a substation in Woodlands, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) said. Its capacity is equivalent to power more than 200 four-room HDB homes for one day, the authority said in a release. "Solar energy is the most viable renewable energy source in Singapore," EMA said. However, solar energy faces intermittent challenges due to cloud cover and rainfall in Singapore's tropical climate. These challenges can be mitigated by energy storage systems that store solar energy for later use.
"These advantages are key drivers for Singapore to maximise the use of solar energy as one of the four switches in Singapore's energy story," EMA said. Energy storage systems will participate in wholesale electricity markets to mitigate intermittency and reduce peak demand.
