PCBA Component Packaging Basics

Mar 17, 2026

This is a concise guide to common component packages in PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly), explaining core types, features and typical applications for quick industry understanding.

1. Through-Hole Technology (THT) Packages

THT components have metal leads that insert through drilled PCB holes and are soldered on the opposite side. They feature strong mechanical stability and high current resistance, ideal for high-power, rugged or legacy designs.

DIP (Dual In-line Package): Dual-row straight leads, common for ICs, capacitors and connectors; widely used in industrial and consumer electronics.

Radial/Axial Leaded: Radial (vertical leads) for capacitors/resistors; Axial (horizontal leads) for through-hole passives.

2. Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Packages

SMT is the mainstream for modern PCBA, with no long leads-components mount directly on PCB surface via solder pads. It enables miniaturization, high density and automated production.

Chip Components (0201/0402/0603/0805): Numeric codes represent length/width (inches), the most common for resistors, capacitors and inductors; smaller sizes mean higher integration.

SOT (Small Outline Transistor): Compact for transistors, diodes and small ICs; low profile, space-saving.

SOIC/SOP (Small Outline Integrated Circuit): Dual-row small-outline ICs, mainstream for mid-scale integrated circuits.

QFP (Quad Flat Package): Four-side gull-wing leads, for high-pin-count ICs; fine pitch for dense circuits.

QFN/DFN (Quad/Dual Flat No-leads): Leadless bottom-pad packages, ultra-compact, good thermal performance; widely used in portable electronics.

3. Special & Advanced Packages

BGA (Ball Grid Array): Solder balls under the package, high pin count, excellent thermal/electrical performance; for CPUs, GPUs and high-performance chips.

Connector Packages: Board-to-board, wire-to-board connectors; customized pins for signal/power transmission.
