Why Proper PCB Storage Is Important

After production, the exposed copper pads and surface finishes on PCBs can gradually oxidize when exposed to air and humidity. Excessive moisture absorption can also cause problems during soldering, such as poor solder joints or delamination.

Proper storage helps to:

  • Prevent oxidation of pads and surface finishes
  • Avoid moisture absorption in the PCB substrate
  • Maintain good solderability during assembly
  • Ensure stable quality during PCBA production

 

Recommended PCB Storage Methods

To maintain PCB quality before assembly, the following storage practices are recommended:

1. Vacuum Packaging
PCBs are usually vacuum-sealed with moisture barrier bags after fabrication to prevent exposure to air and humidity.

2. Use of Desiccants and Humidity Indicator Cards
Desiccants help absorb moisture inside the packaging, while humidity indicator cards allow monitoring of moisture levels.

3. Controlled Storage Environment
PCBs should be stored in a clean and dry environment with recommended conditions:

Temperature: 20–25°C

Humidity: below 50% RH

4. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Dust
Exposure to sunlight, dust, or contaminants may affect PCB surface quality.

Recommended Time for PCBA Assembly After PCB Production

To ensure optimal solderability and reliability, PCBs should ideally be assembled within a recommended time period after fabrication. The storage time may vary depending on the surface finish:
