Ocean Battery, the new utility-scale offshore energy storage
The transition to renewable power generation is a huge challenge. Rapidly growing offshore wind production has led to an exponential increase in the need for large-scale energy storage.
At CES 2022, Dutch startup Ocean Grazer unveiled a new energy storage system design that functions a bit like a hydroelectric dam on the ocean floor.
The "Ocean Battery" installed on the seafloor is a modular, utility-scale energy storage system produced from renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, floating solar farms, tidal and wave energy systems. Batteries are pumped hydro storage systems in boxes that provide environmentally friendly utility-scale energy storage up to a gigawatt-hour (GWh) scale. It is efficient, low maintenance, designed with a sustainable planet in mind and enhances marine life.
Marine batteries are based on dam technology that has proven highly reliable and efficient for over a century. The technology does not require rare earth materials and uses clean water as an energy carrier.
According to the company, the system is about 80 percent efficient and should be able to run an unlimited number of cycles over a lifetime of more than 20 years. However, it will still take years to deploy a system like the "ocean battery" at a scale that needs to work as part of the grid. The company aims to have an offshore system by 2025, but will have an onshore system in the north of the Netherlands by 2023.
