Niche Industry Insight: Conformal Coating Fluorescence Detection in PCBA Reliability

One lesser-known yet critical aspect of PCBA manufacturing lies in fluorescence-based conformal coating inspection.
In high-reliability sectors such as aerospace, medical, and electronics, conformal coatings are applied to protect circuit boards from moisture, corrosion, and dust. However, uneven or incomplete coating coverage can lead to micro-corrosion, leakage currents, or premature board failure.

To address this, advanced manufacturers integrate UV fluorescence detection systems during final inspection. These systems use UV light (typically 365 nm) to visualize the presence and uniformity of coatings that contain trace fluorescent additives. Under UV illumination, properly coated areas emit a distinct glow, allowing operators or automated cameras to detect voids, bubbles, or uncoated zones in real time - even in complex 3D assemblies.

While many engineers focus on soldering quality or component placement, the quality and uniformity of conformal coating is an often-overlooked determinant of long-term PCBA reliability. As PCBA applications expand into harsh or outdoor environments, mastering this detection technique becomes a competitive differentiator for manufacturers pursuing zero-defect standards.
